What the record shows
Autos Drive America counted 51 light-vehicle assembly plants operating in the U.S. in 2026, compared with 52 five years earlier. More than two dozen major new vehicle assembly plants opened during the past four decades. Manufacturing construction spending peaked in 2024 and has declined since.
The U.S. is not currently building more auto plants than ever before. Operating plant count is slightly down over five years. Most recent announcements involve retooling existing facilities, not new construction.
