“They had 40,000 gallons a day leaking”
MOSTLY TRUE
What the record shows
Interior Department reports 16 million gallons leak annually from the Reflecting Pool (approximately 44,000 gallons/day). Pre-2012 renovation, the pool lost ~500,000 gallons/week (~71,400 gallons/day).
The 40,000 gallons/day figure matches current Interior Department data but may conflate pre- and post-renovation leak rates. Context suggests the speaker meant the pre-renovation rate, which was substantially higher.
